This man, Any Colour You Like, is redefining genre standards!

UNDISCOVERED: by Tom Danny P. and Delvin K. | Cover by Freddie Magazine

We’re thrilled and super excited to have Lorenzo Caliani with us on UNDISCOVERED. He was born on a small Mediterranean island called Elba, in Tuscany, Italy, before he migrated to London where he is currently based. Growing up, a lot of creative art sparked his interest, including anime. He also possessed a kind of insatiable passion for music that saw him want to learn to play the guitar as early as age 12. From the start of his recording trials, some of the tools were the old iPod and earplugs. The most intriguing fact about Lorenzo, who now goes professionally as Any Colour You Like, is that he is completely self-taught with his guitar. But as Lorenzo says himself, “Uni has been the biggest learning curve when it comes to production.”

From a bad boy at school to the prodigy of learning

Looking back, he definitely was a bit of a bad boy at school saying “I got suspended quite many times during school, I did enjoy school though, in a weird way!” This also made him give up school or any idea of university. Asked what his best advice has been through his life, he says it’s from his Mom. She “forced” him into Uni and made him understand the possibilities… and look at what you’ve achieved so far Lorenzo. We’re sure that Mom’s proud just like us.

Everything he knows about music comes from his fervent determination and curiosity to learn, which have translated into his eclectic style of music that transcends genre boundaries tactically!

Since he is still studying, he has been able to display a praiseworthy work ethic, so as to enhance that balanced student-work mentality and succeed on both fronts. He cites Linkin Park as his biggest musical inspiration to date, whose way of jumping into different genres and uniquely presenting his sound to create that genuine connection with listeners coupled with the unimaginable levels the artist brought to the genre, deeply resonated with him. He also credits some of his musical influences on such luminaries as, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Shawn Mendez, Muse and Rage Against the Machine.

A cocktail of the creative musical process

Any Colour You Like describes the process of creating music as one that sees him follow the instruments and then flow with the melodies—each integrated at its own opportune time with that freedom of choice and range. It is from this blissful cocktail of the piano, drums, chops, analog synths, digital sounds, and guitars that the material is then mixed and mastered into a complete body of work that makes sense to the ears and is in perfect sync with the vocals and everything else.

Any Colour You Like just recently released a new 5-track EP dubbed, “Machines with a Human Heart” that really tells the tales of the incumbent modern machine slavery, humans controlled by their mobiles and all electronics in fact. Scrolling from one reel to another, from one image to a newsfeed and it goes on. In a quest to outshine this modern-day sophisticated technology, the humans are also slowly turning into machines! What a wise entry point to creativity, right?! Kudos Lorenzo!

Lorenzo wrote over 20 songs for this EP, but I guess we’re going to have to wait for the rest in the future. Genre wise, you’d say this album is drenched in punk rock with a variety of influential melodies. Initially, it was made with the feeling of having a more metal punch to it, but Lorenzo and his team deemed it fit to tone it down a little bit. Whilst there are tracks exuding that powerful anthemic rock and vocals that pertain to the genre appeal of metal rock, there are tunes that are more melodic, less-abrasive and angst-free!

Many talents of the art

Not only does our UNDISCOVERED artist of the day lean into music for his creative madness, but he dabs back and forth within all of the arts, including artwork of graphics as he did graphic design for 5 years. Although he does have his helper and friend, Valentina Picchi, when it comes to creating artwork for the band – and as to what we’ve seen, we can testify, they both know what they’re doing.

With the eyes fixated on the prize, Lorenzo wouldn’t mind gracing some of the biggest stages in the world with Any Colour You Like, such as, Rock am Ring, Madison Square Garden and Wembley. Asked which artist he would want to work with or be an opener for, it was an honest, straightforward answer: Linkin Park. No wonder, even his favorite quote is from a Linkin Park song.

With all the signs pointing to a promising talent with a work ethic to match, undeterred focus, careful consistency, and fortitude, the breakthrough isn’t far ahead. He’s got to build on the momentum his new EP; “Machines with a Human Heart” will generate and then continue delivering and hooking listeners’ one song at a time!

His calm and composed demeanor actually suggests he is someone who is privy to trusting the process and will not want to walk before he can run. As he belts out those loud anthems from within the shower to the annoyance of everyone else around him, as he says himself; “I’m loud, and I sing everywhere”, perhaps he is also building on his vocal strength to withstand a fully-packed Wembley arena…all counting on the raw punch of his voice before the arena-sized instrumentals come to his aid! Might we see him on-stage soon!
